Amy O'Brien, Pre-K Teacher

Amy looks forward to exploring with the Pre-K students, encouraging their natural curiosity, helping them to grow and do things ‘all by themselves’, and having fun so they are excited about learning. Amy comes with glowing recommendations from her college years at Concordia University in Oregon where she did three years of student teaching and received a BA in Education. There she was President of the student body, working with others as a team to bring students together. She was described by a mentor as an “all-star teacher”. Amy spent the past year substitute teaching in Alaska and with the Bainbridge School District, and did her student teaching in Portland Public schools, all in elementary grades. Amy and her husband Justin were married earlier this summer in Alaska and have moved to Bainbridge, where they are enjoying the outdoors. With Amy’s and Millie’s love for fun, their classroom promises to be a very happy place.
Kristi Barr, Pre-School Teacher

It would be hard not to smile watching Kristi’s circle time with the preschool classes. Her warm, nurturing approach brings out the children’s cooperation, open ears, playfulness and wonderful imaginations. Kristi sets her sights on meeting children where they are and helping them to take the next developmental step – particularly by learning through play. She has a BA in Psychology from the UW and a certificate in Early Childhood Education, which she has applied to six years at St. Barnabas Day School, two years at Bainbridge School District as a para-educator, and five years as a substitute teacher and board member of a cooperative preschool. Kristi, her husband Rick and two teenage daughters, Kyla and Kaitlyn, live in a 1901 farmhouse on five acres, where they keep and ride horses. You might even see her at the county fair with their pygmy goats. Of her role as teacher she says, “I feel fortunate to have a job where I can make a difference in the lives of children and their families.”
Millie Loughnane, Pre-School Teacher

The children in Millie’s preschool classes know that learning is supportive and fun. With an emphasis on positive reinforcement and learning though play, her students take joy in trying new things. She encourages them to fully explore the classroom’s many treasures. Millie has been with St. Barnabas for one school year; she is also the Indian Education Program Coordinator for Bainbridge Island District. Holding a Certificate in Education from Lake Washington Technical College, Millie was assistant director for the Suquamish tribe’s preschool program and has taught in various settings including Montessori Country School and Bainbridge Island ChildCare Centers. Her husband Pat works for Bainbridge schools, and her son Trent goes to Blakely. Millie enjoys softball, volleyball, camping and being with her family – her love for play goes beyond the classroom.
Terri Smith, M.D., Director

“St. Barnabas Day School is one of my passions on Bainbridge Island,” Terri says. “I love the connection with the families, the feeling of the same desires in parents to raise socially adept and aware little learners. Everyone there gives their heart and soul to the children.” She is a pediatrician with Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, where she is Clinic Chief of the AfterHours Clinics and Medical Advisor for the CHRMC Call Center. She brings her extensive management experience to St. Barnabas for a second year, inspired to reconnect with the school her children attended.  Terri attended the UW School of Medicine and did her residency in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Her family includes her husband Christopher and two children, Graham and Mara, plus cats, a dog and a gerbil. She has passions for adventure, travel, surfing and sailing. About the school she says, “I can't imagine the love and security that the children feel when they are there. It’s safe to learn, and fail, and not be compared, the continuation of unconditional love. In that environment children feel safe and open their minds more. I want to be a part of that.”
