St. Barnabas Commercial Kitchen

Our commercial kitchen was added to St. Barnabas in 2016. Since then, there’s been a lot cooking in the kitchen—in addition to great food. Kitchen Manager, Tim Shelly, has a knack for doing incredible outreach into our larger community of Bainbridge Island. Through him, we currently provide over 2,100 meals a month to our community.

Starting in September 2022, St. Barnabas has donated kitchen time to these charities:

Chilly Hilly

• Used by Bainbridge Island Senior & Community Center volunteers each February to prepare chili and cornbread for 2,500 participants of the famous regional bike competition.

• Proceeds from the race are donated to ten different charities.

Arms Around Bainbridge (AAB)

AAB began as a thirty–mile swim around Bainbridge Island to benefit one woman with cancer and has grown to provide help for many neighbors in need on the island. Our kitchen has been used for the past three years.

• Used once a month for nearly four years (800 hours and 6,000+ meals as of April 2026).

• Over 140 meals a month are provided.

• Provides four to eight healthy meals for each person in the AAB families.

Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC)

• In June, 2024, the AAB was expanded to IVC.

• Over 160 meals a month are given to their most vulnerable care recipients.

Helpline House

• The Senior Soup and Sandwiches program began in November 2024, making and delivering eighty soup and sandwich combos twice a week. That’s 160 nutritious, ready–to–eat meals for people in need.

• Kitchen time is also donated to Helpline House to create ready–to–eat meals utilizing donated products given to Helpline by local grocery stores, which might not be usable by the clients directly, and creates ready-to-eat meals, which are frozen and made available to clients of Helpline. Another 200+ meals a week are provided this way.

Sharenet, Kingston (Foodbank)

• 175 ready–to–eat freezer meals delivered every two weeks.

Tim, along with his partner Kari, prepare the meals for AAB, IVC, Helpline House, and ShareNet.

In addition to supporting our coffee hours and church social events, our not–for–profit kitchen provides a wonderful opportunity for us to support the broader island community. In 2015, the kitchen was upgraded to qualify as a commercial kitchen, largely to support fledgling caterers, local entrepreneurs, and those dabbling in wholesale. There are currently five caterers who pay a low hourly fee for use of the kitchen. The number fluctuates and usually increases in spring and summer when more small caterers need space to make prepared food to sell at our local farmer’s market. Our kitchen manager has done a wonderful job in expanding that mission.
