Sacraments

Inclusion and joyful spirituality are core values at St. Barnabas—values we live out in community as a place to celebrate the events of our shared life in Christ. St. Barnabas offers a place to share and celebrate the successes in your life and to find comfort during the difficult times. Our clergy can meet with you to help and guide you in these events. We celebrate many life events with the sacraments of our church—baptisms, marriages, memorial services, and inurnments—and we invite you to commemorate the events in your life at St. Barnabas within the community of faith.

  • Holy Baptism, along with the Holy Eucharist, is one of the primary sacraments of the church. As a sacrament, it is an “outward and visible sign of the inward and spiritual grace” of an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage necessary to persevere in the Christian life, the spirit to know and love God, with a profound sense of joy and wonder.

The Rite of Holy Baptism is a celebration of, by, and for the Christian community. As we gather before the font and renew our baptismal vows together, we both recognize and remember that we are bound together by our common faith in Jesus Christ. Through baptism, God adopts us and makes us members of the church and inheritors of the Kingdom of God. (Book of Common Prayer, pp 298, 858)

At St. Barnabas, baptisms are offered throughout the year on specific Sundays and at the Easter Vigil. All children and adults are welcome for baptism at St. Barnabas! Instruction is required for parents and godparents. For more information about baptisms at St. Barnabas, please email or phone us at 206.842.5601.

  • This is the central act of Christian worship, where bread and wine are shared as the Body and Blood of Christ. Regardless of where you are on your faith journey, no matter what denomination or tradition, all are welcome to receive communion at St. Barnabas.

  • Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which the candidates “express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860). It is an invitation to those who were baptized at an early age to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, recommit themselves to the responsibilities of their baptism, and receive laying on of hands by a bishop.

At St. Barnabas, the confirmation program is a series of presentations, discussions, and small group meetings designed for anyone wanting to go deeper into the history, theology, and core values of the Episcopal Church. It concludes with the opportunity to receive the sacramental Rite of Confirmation. For more information about confirmation, please email or phone us at 206.842.5601.

  • Christian marriage is a sacred covenant in which two people commit their lives to one another before God and the community. We happily welcome couples seeking a reverent, inclusive setting for a Christ–centered wedding celebration.

We are privileged that you are considering St. Barnabas as the place to celebrate your wedding. Our clergy and staff are here to support you though premarital counseling and in the planning of a joyful and meaningful service rooted in faith and community. For more details about being married at St. Barnabas, please contact our office by email, or call 206.842.5601.

  • We are honored to walk with you during a time of loss and remembrance. A memorial service at St. Barnabas offers space for prayer, gratitude, storytelling, and the celebration of a life well lived. Tierney Parish Hall is also available should you decide to hold a memorial reception after the service.

Our clergy, staff, and memorial reception committee are here to support you with care and compassion as you make these arrangements. If you would like to speak immediately to a clergy person please call 206.842.5601.

  • Our interrium is a sacred place for meditation and prayer on our grounds and within our parish community. This contemplative space allows members and families to meditate on their memories and ensures that those no longer with us are not forgotten. In the words of one thoughtful six–year–old, it is “the remembering place.”

If you would like to schedule an inurnment, or if you have already pre-purchased a niche, please contact us. A member of our staff will follow up with you regarding next steps and coordination with clergy.

We are honored to assist you with arranging an inurnment service, and are here to support you with care and reverence during this meaningful time. For more information, please contact us by email or phone us at 206.842.5601.
